How to agree objectives for a new helping relationship

Objective is simply a goal or an aim for something.
In a new helping relationship, objectives should be agreed in a SMART way!

Here is how:

Specific (S):

If the client wants to better their fitness and lifestyle, to achieve the goal, the helper will ask a few questions, such as:

- why do you want it
- how are you going to reach the goal

Measurable (M):

This shows the helpee when the goal or objective has been completed. This motivates them.

For example, the aim for a better lifestyle and fitness will be met when the client has made a vision board, a diet and workout plan maybe and a proper routine to follow daily. The client can discuss this with a friend or family or even a fitness coach if needed.

Attainable (A):

The objectives should be divided into small and consistent daily goals. Otherwise it can be overwhelming for the client.
Like while climbing a mountain, you should not keep your eyes at the top, you should focus on your next step and steadiness.

In that case, for reaching the fitness goal, the client should not think about what they will gain in the next six months. They should daily maintain a sustainable balanced diet, some daily physical activity, proper sleeping schedule.

This is more achievable than having unrealistic expectations.

Relevant (R):

In order to set the objectives realistically, the helpee should be accountable and keep their personal abilities and responsibilities in mind.

For example, if the helpee wants to follow a balanced healthy diet, but has to rely on takeout foods due to work and busy schedules, they can make a meal prep on weekends.
They can make healthy foods for the whole week, store them accordingly, and this way can sustain a balanced healthy diet to reach the fitness goal.

Time-bound (T):

In order to reach the measurable, attainable and relevant goal, the helpee should have a sense of time management. They should have their own set of time frame planned, so that they know which part of objective they want to achieve in which duration of time.

Again, they should be realistic and consistent in this criteria as well.

Overall, this is how an agreeable objective frame can be created in SMART way to help a helpee for their betterment.
